  • SCR 77 Promotes Fall Prevention Awareness

The California Commission on Aging is pleased to announce the passage of a legislative resolution promoting Fall Prevention Awareness in California. Senate Concurrent Resolution 77, authored by Senator Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), establishes an annual Fall Prevention Week recognition in the state and urges all state and local agencies to incorporate fall prevention considerations in their planning documents affecting housing, transportation, parks and recreational facilities. Co-sponsored by the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence at the USC Andrus Gerontology Center and the California Commission on Aging, the resolution also urges state and local aging programs to incorporate fall prevention in their master plans, and recommends the development of standardized definitions and reporting methods to approve the information available on falls.  This year, Fall Prevention Week will be September 21-27.

  • CCoA Sponsors Cultural Diversity Resolution

The California Commission on Aging is sponsoring a legislative resolution to urge greater cultural diversity in the delivery of aging programs and services in the state. Building on the CCoA’s 2007 success with legislation promoting the California White House Conference on Aging delegates’ priority of increased funding for senior housing, CCoA felt the WHCoA priority of increasing cultural competency was an important next step. The resolution, carried by Senator Alex Padilla (D-San Fernando Valley), calls on the State to plan now for a growing multi-cultural older adult population, provide more comprehensive delivery of culturally competent services to older adults, and urges the University of California and the California Health and Human Service Agency to incorporate cultural competency into all educational programs and systems devoted to serving older Californians.
